Working on the Hood River Ranger
district of the Mt. Hood National Forest late in the season suring 1999
was really a treat. I was a crewmember aboard a Model 80 Heavy fire
engine most of the time. "The Hood" as we called the forest and its
surrounding areas where we performed mutual aid with the Oregon Department
of Forestry (ODF) and Washington State Department of Natural Resources
(DNR) had a heavy Urban Interface factor. Most fires were hit agressively
with many resources. Even small fires of only 2-5 acres usually warranted
a call for "Air Attack" - air tankers loaded with retardent and/or
helicopters with buckets.
I travelled "Off-Forest" twice in my couple of months on The Hood. Once to the Willamette National Forest (pronounced wil-LAM-ette) for the Monteith Rock Fire near the town of Oakridge. Then once to the beautiful and rugged Wenatchee National Forest of Washington near the town of Naches. Hi to-
